Pay them what they are owed :: GN

Gulf News editorial, closing sentence:

The workers receive little enough pay anyway for the ultramodern buildings they contribute the labour to; surely it is not too much to ensure they receive their just dues on time, as required by law?
Agree.

Same editorial, opening sentence:

Protesting workers are damaging the reputation of the UAE; action is needed now.

Disagree.

Isn't this like saying a witness is to blame for damaging the reputation of a hit-and-run driver?

Rewrite: Protesting workers Weak enforcement and scofflaw employers are damaging the reputation of the UAE; action is needed now.

Question for discussion: Why should the UAE be concerned with its reputation?

Because there is an ongoing workers exodus that no one IS acknowledging?

...Perhaps because reputations are a hangover of tribal societies. We in the west are somewhat confident that our legal systems will protect us when business relations sour. The tribal system limits growth since your tribe tends to only do business with other tribes that you trust...hence the obsession with reputations throughout the region.
