An economist visits New Orleans :: Slate

Tyler Cowen of Marginal Revolution has the economist's eyes to see what others do not see so readily:
So why have the universities done so much better than the city as a whole?
I won't spoil it for you. Go read the whole thing. Brilliant.

Totally brilliant.

Several things are in the universities' favour:
- accountability
- an organised chain of command
- self-funding (or at least control of the funding)
- the ability to reinvent
- the need to get back to normal asap
- a clear-cut vision and goal of what was required
- the knowledge that a high percentage of students would return

A great read through all 5 days.
